Latest entry in the ongoing debate over fructose and the "toxicity" of sugar:

Scientific Review of Lustig's "Fat Chance" (PDF)

Quote:
Also, according to that research, the only negative effect that is typically demonstrated with intakes above the threshold of 50 grams per day is a transient increase in plasma triglycerides that occurs following consumption of a single high dose of fructose. It is important to keep in mind that a 50 gram dose of fructose would typically be accompanied by at least that amount of other carbohydrates. Regardless, his recognition that negative effects likely occur only at high doses does not fit with the gist of the book, wherein he repeatedly suggests that sugar is a toxin to be avoided.

I find the critique much more compelling (and supported by the evidence) than Lustig's unfortunate hyperbole. But, because I put more stock in moderation, flexibility, and evaluating diets based on the entire nutrient profile - as opposed to rigidity, food avoidance, absolutism, and evaluating individual food items regardless of context - I am predisposed to believe it.

Fortunately, you're all grownups - you have the source material now, and can make up your own minds.

Will read later but whatever it says I strongly believe that they put something in our sweets that make them addictive! Thanks for giving us another article to ponder!

Lusting is a bit of a loon. Aside from his proposed nanny-state "solutions" I read somewhere about how he was telling people that humans never evolved eating sweet foods when a bunch of breast-feeding moms had a decidedly different possition.
