Hey Janus, I've been to the annual Cullen Skink competition funnily enough held in Cullen, but you wouldn't get away with calling that Cullen Skink. Don't get me wrong it looks great and I would certainly enjoy eating it, but they are snobs and only allow certain ingredients in their Cullen Skink, bets wishes and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Wow Tambro that’s interesting! What are the classic ingredients in Cullen Skink then? I was pretty sure it was smoked haddock and leek!

Thanks, Gilly, it was so good!

I love smoked haddock in any way, shape or form. My take on Cullen Skink is smoked haddock, tatties and leeks cooked in milk. Very simple dish but so tasty. Made me hungry now lol Jan

Sounds just the same as mine, Gilly! Nothing like a good home made soup!

I'll be getting the Scotch Broth on the go shortly. My fave!

Janus & Gilly, I'm sure your Cullen Skink is delicious and I am sure everyone would enjoy eating some. The traditional recipe used for the Cullen Competition is: Smoked Haddock, Potatoes, Onions and Cream. The winner of the 2018 competition was Lynne Watson who runs Lily's Kitchen Café in Cullen. I have tasted her Cullen Skink a few times and it is delicious, if you are ever in the area, I suggest you give it a try. Google her or try Facebook and I am sure she will get back to you, best wishes

Thanks Tam but I have to disagree with your traditional recipe. Back in the day peasants would never use a luxury like cream in a soup! Maybe onions, I agree but never cream! Have a good Xmas!

Gilly, I totally agree with you, but as I stated earlier the people who run the Cullen Skink Competition are a bunch of snobs, and when I questioned the use of cream (like you) I was told it wasn't a luxury item and was freely available on the local farms, and was often swapped by the local fishermen for some fish. Best wishes and have a good Christmas.
