I just found a post in a Fb fasting group that explains a lot. It spurred me to research something called "refeeding edema", something apparently common with recovering anorexics, and attributed to part of the healing process. Yesterday, my ankles were swollen to the size of softballs after driving for an hour and sitting in conversation for 3 hours. It comes from eating too much too soon after extended fasting. It's recommended to slowly increase caloric intake by 200/day until you reach your IDEE. Geesh...why didn't anyone mention this??? Also, anything under 500 calories a day is considered fasted, and the few days previous to starting the New Moon fast, I was under..as well as the majority of the month before. No wonder my electrolytes went all wonky on me! Lesson learned!!! I will be making some serious changes in my eating plan. Thank you to my buddies who gave suggestions. Each one of you gave me a piece of the puzzle.

I'm really learning how little I know, I honestly have no idea how I managed to lose 220 pounds in less than a year.

ISMPH? Maybe Fung's fasting book says more. To listen to his talks, it's all systems go after a fast. If all you have is water weight, that's great, but could that be dangerous if you have CHF?

That's a bummer your ankles have a tendency to swell! Also on low calorie you don't have enough sodium but you know that. I've incorporated chicken broth, I tend to be too low and I think your right. I know it's easy to mess up our electrolytes.

My potassium is a little too low, and my provider is calling a supplement onto my pharmacy. Keto is diuretic, but maybe I got myself in trouble by going back and forth with the carb levels, and water weight was up and down all the time.

At this point, Lizzy, I'm glad it's *just* my feet and ankles! They're better today after my whoosh this morning. I do make sure I get plenty of salt, but I'm chronically dehydrated. Can't stand to drink water!

yes; refeed syndrom can wack the electolytes in the blood and kill you . i worked icu for many years and the diaticions really where very carefull when we restarted nutrition on the sick ones .the phosphorus would go wacko. missing food for a few hours or even a day is one thing but fasting to the point of starvation is quite another thing

Thanks for the insight, Kathleen! I know the electrolytes are not a thing to monkey around with, but I'm far, far away from starvation. I figure I've got about 500 fajita dinners in reserve around my middle. LOL I am revising my fasting/eating plan so I can keep things more in balance.

Interesting Kes, I have had no issues with swelling after an extended fast, my longest has been 6 days, I do eat huge green salads when I'm eating and I usually have fruit right before a fast. I take a magnesium supplement and I drink a couple of tablespoons of unfiltered ACV in my water daily when I am fasting. I have not gotten any cramps, dizziness or swelling and when I restart my food, I eat a handful of nuts about an hour before my actual meal. I cannot eat a large amount at my first meal, I get full quickly. Other than that I have had no issues.

Wow, learn new things every day. Quite a journey.

@Debra, I obviously made some errors when I did the extended fast. It's a learning process, and I will certainly incorporate your techniques in future experiments with longer fasts. I *finally* got some unfiltered ACV this past weekend, and am using it daily.

Hope nothing serious is going on. Keep an eye on the edema. Edema is never a good thing. If it isn't resolved fairly quickly you probably should see a physician.

Thanks Engeland, I'm doing much better now. Mineral water and ACV are my new best friends. ;)
