Whew, what a ride!!!!!
I went to bed last night around 8 PM, knowing that the worst was yet to come. At that time, the power was still on, but there were bands of heavy rain coming through. I woke up around 12:30 AM to howling wind that sounded like a freight train, and pitch darkness. I had pulled out my emergency radio and a lantern in anticipation, so I got up to monitor the situation.
We had sustained winds between 45-55 MPH, with gusts up to 80. Y'all, I live in a double-wide mobile home, and that sucker didn't even shudder. I heard some debris being blown against the sides and roof, and feared the worst.
My land is a woods. I have 40+ ft. trees all around me. I figured if things were going to go badly, they would, and me sitting up worrying about it wasn't going to change anything. So I made myself a stiff drink, listened to the news, and went back to bed around 4 AM.
I woke up about 8:30, because it sounded like I was in an airplane. The rain had mostly stopped, but the WIND!
My yard is a lake, and the tall pines were being whipped around. It was relentless. Finally, around 10:30, the frequency and intensity of the gusts subsided, and I saw a convoy of power company bucket trucks come down the highway. Having heard of the devastation in Savannah and points north, I figured it would take days to restore power.
I was outside, talking to my neighbors who had sheltered at his workplace overnight, at around 11:30, when my air conditioning unit kicked on. It took me a minute to realize...the power was on!!!!! Holy cow, that was fast!
Damage assessment to my property: almost NONE. A half dozen broken-off shingles from the roof, a few small branches down in the yard.
The internet/cable was restored around an hour ago, and the sun is shining in sunset colors. The lake is receding rapidly and all is well.
I'm sitting down to a dinner of teriyaki pork with zoodles with a feeling of great relief and thankfulness.
I appreciate and cherish all the prayers and good wishes from this community. Thank you.

Wow, that was lucky. So glad you're ok, that you home is still standing and that the utilities are back already. I have friends who have a condo in North Myrtle Beach, right smack dab on the beach. Their building is probably in the water right now. They're on the 9th floor so hopefully their unit is ok, but they've evacuated so won't know for awhile how things really are. Take care, Kes, you had quite a night.

So glad you're safe and sound with power restored and everything, that's awesome. A few years ago when Hurricane Ike blew through here our power was only out for eighteen hours, which is a long time, but was not nearly as long as everyone anticipated. There's nothing quite like living through a hurricane, the relentlessness of it followed by a really eerie calm that just hangs in the air for days. You'll sleep like a baby tonight!

So happy you made out all right. When we had storms here in South LA, we didn't get power for days or even weeks in some cases. You are very lucky. When Katrina hit my little island on the Gulf of Mexico, I could not get home for 6 weeks. We did not get power for 7 weeks. Bad memories. In the past. :)

Thanks, friends. I'm coming off the adrenaline high, and very tired. @Phil, you're right, I AM going to sleep well tonight! Now that I've ridden this one out...they're calling it *Historic*, I will be better informed if another comes through. I know what my home will tolerate, and I know what my nerves will tolerate. LOL I'm still immensely impressed that services were restored so quickly!
