Yesterday we went to see my mom and her sister, and Mr Coco took his audio gear to record them talking about their childhood in Japan. They're only 17 months apart in age and were just old enough to remember events of WWII (about 5-8 yrs old and 7-10). Their dad was a doctor and got drafted into the Japanese army and was working in Nagasaki when the atomic bomb was dropped. Their family lived across the bay in Sasebo, and they remember seeing the yellow glow when it happened. Of course they had no idea what it was. Their grandfathers traveled to Nagasaki 5 days after the bombing to try to retrieve their father's remains. There was nothing left but bones and his sword, which was the only way they could identify him. He and his division were visiting the mayor, and they died in the bomb shelter there. I'm glad we have this family history recorded before my aunt goes off to live in Japan for the next 3 yrs.
We bought some fig trees and arugula at the plant store yesterday. Mr Coco has always loved gardening, and this year he's going to plant edibles. Of course we'll have tomatoes and herbs too. Can't wait for the first figs, although these trees may be too young to do much this year. One of our favorite treats is a fig with gorgonzola cheese and aged balsamic vinegar -- the kind that's syrupy.

Coco thank you for sharing this information regarding your family, their, and our, history. Reading your words I got a surge of strong energy run up and down my spine as I visualized what it must have been like to witness such a cloud. I am truly Amazed we as a human species are still thriving. Throughout history up until this point we didn't do our selves in is miraculous in itself. As for your great grandfather that image is very powerful and such a senseless loss, war is that senseless. He and they who gave their lives for the human condition are angels wouldn't you agree? TOWANDA!!!

Well the fig trees sound great... I haven't developed at taste for arugula yet... reminds me too much of dandylions. Thanks for sharing that tidbit on WWII... truely a horrific time.

Lisa, it is miraculous that our species has not done itself in yet. I feel bad for people like my grandfather who are drafted into war, maybe against their will. Who knows? And no citizen wants to think their country is in the wrong. Both sides inflicted such terrible suffering on innocent people.

Matt, I know my grandparents ate dandelions, but can't say I ever have. But if they taste like arugula, maybe I will now! Those WWII stories are amazing to me. I think about how I really don't have anything quite so exciting to tell the younger generations. Maybe I should be grateful for that!

Coco, what an amazing family history you have and how awesome that you recorded it! I am so sorry for the loss that your family suffered during WWII...it has always hurt my heart to think of all the families that are affected by war. To me war is such a terrible thing, and although I know that at times it is a necessary evil, it always make me sad to think of all the innocent people that are affected by the actions of their leaders. Hope that you have a wonderful week.
