Sodium is my biggest enemy, because I stay away from sugar. My armband pedometer heart rate monitor recommended that I keep my sodium below 1500 mg a day in order to lose weight. I have been comparing foods to see which one is healthier for me. I did not know that RAW meats had sodium in them, before you even cook them! I was comparing two meats at Food-A-Pedia and saw this recommendation about sodium: **If you are African American, hypertensive, diabetic, or have chronic kidney disease, reduce your sodium to 1500 mg a day. In addition, people who are age 51 and older need to reduce sodium to 1500 mg a day. All others need to reduce sodium to less than 2300 mg a day. supertracker.usda.gov/foodapedia.aspx

Thanks for the info - I never keep track of my sodium intake as I have low blood pressure, but I will from now on.

Thanks for the info Deb, I never touch a salt shaker or cook with salt. I find that a person gets enough in the foods we eat daily, and when I am eating out I ask that they do not use salt on my food...I don't have problems with it, but I find if it is not sugar it's salt, Food Manufacturers are too free with these two products...they know both are so addictive to a lot of people out there and yet they continue to poison them...such shame!

I do add sea salt in moderate amts. I eat very few processed foods. I don't keep track but probably should.

I love/hate salt. Sounds like you really have a grip on the sodium demon for info. I'll have a read later.

Crimany. I've been shooting for 2300 but since I meet the over 51 criteria looks like it's time to be even more careful. I tend to have low BP but DH does have a BP issue so I try to be conservative with what we cook here. I rarely salt anything, but as others have pointed out, there's a lot of sodium in many foods that you just wouldn't think of.

Tomatoes are one and it's fresh tomato season..... personally, I'll eat the tomatoes and not worry about the sodium. I have tomatoes this year !!! YAHOO!!! raised beds were the solution...

ROFLMAO Wholefoodnut. I had been thinking the same thing. Fresh tomatoes are the one food I will salt ;-) We've tried to grow them so many times but the only area on our lot that would work just doesn't get the right amount of sun. Our neighbors house is situated slightly differently on their lot and they've grown bumper crops in the past. I'm like a junky looking for a dealer when you see me at the farmers market searching for the Heirlooms.

This is great info. Thanks for sharing, Deb.

Tomatoes have lots of natural sodium. I rarely salt them. An old family fav though is a bit f sugar on sliced tomatoes for desert. I want to try some heirlooms again next year. The raised beds might just let them grow. The soil n my yard has not wanted to grow much. Lots of weeds and mint does great.

Thanks for the info. Good to know. I super seldom use salt, but like a lot of people, fresh tomatoes with salt and pepper and a tiny dab of olive oil mayo is wonderful. I did give up the bread, for the time being, so I probably won't have a "sandwich." :) Can't control the amount of salt on food when you eat out, except what you put on yourself.

WFN, I've had family members who ate sugar on tomatoes. I think it may be a geographic thing ;-) Actually, my default go to on a tomato is a drizzle of balsamic. If I find that balsamic is high in sodium, I'm sunk! The upside I think for many of us is that when we get away from sodium, we can REALLY taste it and things taste overly salty. It's like a safety switch that gets reactivated.

Thanks for the info, I hope I can learn to live with a bit less salt. Have a great evening.

My parents, brothers, aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of them sprinkle salt on their watermelon. I used to do that, until a couple years ago.

Yes, I definitely do have to watch the sodium for sure. Sometimes, I have to play with my menu to get the desired results that I am looking for in the Sodium Dept. But lately, I haven't been checking my Sodium and am going to go back at look at the last couple of days to see what I have been trending. I usually know when the sodium is high, because I get a slight headache on the left side of my head and true enough, when I take my blood pressure, it's high. Thanks for reminding me.

Chris, you can make your own veggie burgers and control the salt.

Vickie, My family was from Wisconsin. I agree on the balsamic. Deb, I know lots of people who salt their watermelon. I tried it to see, decided plain was better.
